About the blog:

As a course participant of " University of Oregon-AEI's Building Teaching Skills Through The Interactive Web - Fall 2014" program, I take great pleasure in creating and updating this blog. In the Webskills Homepage, my reflections on what I learned each week and how I intend to implement my learning in my work as a teacher will be the main area of focus. In the India: My Homeland Page, I would like to share with you some anecdotes from my life, stories regarding my students, the schooling system in my country and a few snippets about India. Thank you for visiting. Please, do leave your valuable comments.

India: My Homeland

Unity in Diversity!

India is a vast country with great diversity in its landscape, climate, flora, fauna, languages, customs, traditions, religions, architecture, dance forms, music, cuisine as well as its people.

It seems as if many cultures have come together to unite all the diverse elements and form this great nation.

Namaste!

Throughout India there are some common cultural practices. Folding ones hands to say “Namaste” is the standard form of greeting. Namaste, a term now widely known throughout the world, means “to bow in respect or salutation”.

So, friends, Namaste! Welcome, to a tour of My Homeland, My India!

The Indian Landscape:

Lofty mountains, rolling hills, vast plains, deep valleys, mineral-rich plateaus, mighty rivers, magnificent waterfalls, a hot sandy desert, dense forests, saline swamps, lagoons, limestone caves, beaches and archipelagoes - India, has it all. Languages, Dialects and more.....

India has 29 states divided on the basis of language. The 2011 Census recognizes 1635 rationalized mother tongues! There are 30 primary languages which are each spoken by more than a million people. I'll name a few - Hindi, Bengali, Gujrati, Marathi, Assamese, Bhojpuri, Punjabi, Urdu, Kannada, Malayalam, Telegu, Tamil, Oriya, etc.

There are thousands of dialects and accents across India. A single language is spoken so differently when one goes from one district to another.

I belong to the state of West Bengal and Bengali is my mother tongue. I know Hindi and English too. These two are the official languages of India and are spoken through out the country.

To be Contd.......
